kayak light mod

March 22nd, 2010

last summer i purchased one of the $5 led glow sticks that life gear makes to use for my 360 degree kayak light. i rigged it up to the top of a 1/2″ pvc pipe for use for night fishing around the lakes in dfw, but after the first few trips, they eventually got water in them and quit working.  i found myself opening them up to let them air out the next day, hoping they would come back to life.

today, i found this…

camping from a hammock?!

March 14th, 2010

just a quick update.  got a list of blog posts to make, just have to find the time to write them out.

i recently got into hammock camping… well sorta… i recently purchased a hammock to go camping with, but i’m having a hard time finding local sources of good polyester rope and webbing that will hold me up in the air all night.  ideas are appreciated…  if you’re interested in learning more about this style of camping, Shug, over at hammock fourms has posted a lot of good noob videos on youtube. he’s a goofy buy, but get past his antics and you’ll learn a lot of good information. here’s video one…

the next step is to build a stand that will hold me up if i only have one tree available…. i’ll let you guess step three.

removable disk backup

January 14th, 2010

i have a 16 gb thumb drive that i carry with me almost all the time.  the main reason i use the drive is to store thinks like serial numbers of items at home, personal records in encrypted databases, and to have some things with me like bookmarks and ftp access to my websites as well as some things i may need when i’m away from a computer i own, in order to help with outages at work.

so, i’ve been playing with robocopy and i found a guide by Greg Shultz over at Tech Republic that helped me write the following script to backup my thumb drive to my current user’s download folder found on vista and windows 7 machines.  i’ll walk you through the commands to show you how to modify this script for your own selfish needs.  :-D

i have the following file saved to the root of my thumb drive as ‘backup.bat’.  whenever i am ready to backup my thumb drive, i simply double click on the file and let it automagically do the rest.

mkdir c:%homepath%\downloads\thumb_backup
robocopy ./ c:%homepath%\downloads\thumb_backup /MIR /XF backup.log /R:5 /W:15 /V /NP /LOG+:c:%homepath%\downloads\thumb_backup\backup.log
echo %date% %time% – %computername%\%USERNAME% >> ./lastbackup.log

so here’s how it works…

where is winkydo.net?

December 29th, 2009

that’s right, winkydo.net is now jermlac.blogspot.com!  i have archived the old posts from winkydo.net to a wordpress site for now.  if you are looking for an old post, shoot me an email and i will send you the link.

always remember that the past is very important and not something you should hide from yourself.  it is the reason you are exactly where you are today.  everyone i have spent time with, learned from, and those who helped me get to where i am today, will not be forgotten.  you know who you are, and you know your involvement in the big picture of my life.  however, there comes a time when you realize that some things are best left behind as you grow and begin new adventures with new people.

growing up?

November 19th, 2009

When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became man, I put away childish things.      ~ 1 Corinthians 13:11

i am working on changing my blogging style.  winkydo.net will be going away as soon as i find a good solution for archiving the information currently stored at my webhost.  also, i am going to be transitioning from blogging my random personal thoughts to instead keeping up with my projects and shenanigans and throwing in an update or two as i go.

so… here it goes.
